  • Area: 51,100 square kilometers.
  • Biodiversity: Notwithstanding its small size (it covers only 0.03 % of the planet’s surface), Costa Rica has 4% of the world’s biodiversity. About 25% of the country is under some form of environmental protection∗.
  • Boundaries: To the North with Nicaragua, to the South with Panamá, to the East with the Caribbean Sea and to the West with the Pacific Ocean.
  • Capital (and largest city): San José.
  • Religion: Although freedom of religion exists, the religion of the state is Catholicism, which is practiced by around 74%∗∗ of the population.
  • Territorial division: Costa Rica is divided into seven provinces (San José, Cartago, Heredia, Guanacaste, Limón, Puntarenas and Alajuela).
  • Languages: Spanish is the official language, although a large part of the population also speaks English, which is taught at most public and private schools.
  • Type of government: Democratic Republic. It is the oldest democracy in Latin America.
  • Population: 4,509,392 (according to a 2009 census of the National Institute on Statistics and Census).
  • Life expectancy: 79 years∗∗∗.
  • Literacy: 96%, which makes it the highest in the Central American region.
  • Currency: Colón (¢).
